Here's my
approach to ab training...
I train my abs
3-4 times per week for
about 10 minutes
per session. I usually
perform 3-4
different exercises for a
total of 9-12
sets. My main focus is
the deep
contraction and exhalation
at the top of
each crunch movement.
I maintain total
concentration throughout
the entire
exercise, pressing my abdominal
muscles into my
spine. I keep constant tension on my working muscles, moving through a
slow and controlled range of motion.
I work my abdominals in a variety of
angles to ensure proper symmetry and muscle balance. I put so much into
each rep that there is no way I could complete more than 25 repetitions without
a short rest (30 seconds) in between.
It's not about how many crunches you perform at one time, it's what you put into
each repetition, the concentration, the control, and how hard you make your
muscles contract.
Let's not forget that diet makes up 80% of the six pack equation. My diet
consists of 6 nutrient dense, balanced meals consumed every 2 to 3 hours
throughout the day. For the most part, my diet is pretty “clean”, meaning
that the foods I eat are packed with muscle building nutrients without extras
like refined sugars, salt, and saturated fats. My main protein sources include
egg whites, boneless/skinless chicken & turkey breast, protein powders, lean
red meats (trimming off all visible fat), and all varieties of seafood
(especially salmon & tuna). My carbohydrate sources include fiber rich,
whole, natural foods such as fruits, vegetables, beans, rice, potatoes, and
oatmeal. Most of the fat I consume comes from of fish, extra virgin olive oil,
nuts, and seeds. Oh, and I drink a ton of water, okay, maybe not a ton,
more like 1-2 gallons a day. This helps to prevent water retention,
believe me, you'll be amazed at the difference it makes.
